Imran Khan ally joins Nawaz Sharif camp in Pakistan Election shake-up

2024 Pakistan Election update: independent candidate supported by Imran Khan aligns with Nawaz Sharif faction

In the latest Pakistan election, Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has emerged as the leading party, securing 101 out of 264 seats in the National Assembly. However, the election process has been marred by allegations of rigging and irregularities.

Election results and allegations

As per the official tally, PTI won 101 seats, while Nawaz Sharif's party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), secured 75 seats, making it the largest single party in parliament. The delayed results and allegations of rigging have led to protests and demands for investigation by opposition parties and international observers.

US lawmakers have urged President Joe Biden not to recognize the election results until allegations of interference and fraud are thoroughly investigated. They have echoed concerns raised by local and international election observers regarding restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly during the electoral process.

Coalition talks and political maneuvering

With no single party securing a clear majority, efforts are underway to form a coalition government. Former President Asif Zardari has demanded that his son, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, be made Prime Minister in exchange for his party's support to PML-N in forming a government in Punjab province. Talks between PML-N and PPP are ongoing, while PTI has ruled out negotiations with both parties for government formation.

PTI supporters have taken to the streets, alleging election irregularities and demanding the prompt release of complete election results. The party has also filed numerous legal challenges against alleged rigging and manipulation of results. Additionally, there have been reports of clashes between supporters of different parties and law enforcement agencies.

The coming days are crucial as Pakistan navigates through this period of uncertainty and political upheaval.
